Account-Based Marketing For IT And Technology Companies

You have more data about your market than most business sectors: the raw material for an account-based plan is already in your systems.

What is usually missing is a shared decision about where to focus. myGTMplan turns that data into a practical plan: the accounts that matter, the people involved in each decision and the actions needed to move each account forward, agreed by sales and marketing together.

Why It Is Harder In Technology

You are not selling to just to IT. Gartner found that 67% of the people involved in technology buying decisions do not work in IT. Budget responsibilities have spread, so your buying group may now run through the line of business that owns the problem, finance, security and procurement. Your champion may not even be the person who signs.

Your buyer is braced for disappointment. Gartner's end-user buying behaviour research puts post-purchase regret at around 80% of enterprise technology decisions, and organisations reporting high regret took seven to ten months longer to complete the purchase. Regret costs you cycle time long before it costs you a renewal.

Consensus decides it, not preference. Gartner's finding is that a high-quality deal starts with agreement inside the buying organisation about what the technology is for and what it will be worth. No champion manufactures that alone. It comes from the people around them being reached separately, in their own language.

Your revenue is in the renewal. In Gartner's research on subscription agreements, 60% of buyers involved in renewal or expansion decisions said they regret nearly every purchase they make. For a business built on recurring revenue that is where the growth is, and most marketing plans have nothing written down for existing customers at all.

What Your Plan Contains

Snapshots of the myGTMplan strategy and playbook pages

Illustrative example, not client data.

The ABM Strategy page.

Your targets by year and by month, the accounts you are selling to, the people who decide across the business and not just in IT, your conversion rates and the headcount behind the number. The figures connect, so changing a conversion rate shows you the effect on bookings and on hiring.

The ABM Playbook page.

How an account moves from a name on a list to a signed contract across eight stages, with an owner and one measure to watch at each. Built around the two places technology deals die: the security and procurement review that starts after your champion has already said yes, and the renewal that is quietly decided months before anyone asks you about it.

The guidance to run it.

A full presentation behind the two pages, covering how to choose each tactic and put it to work.

Your Three Tiers, Set For Technology

One to one.

The enterprise accounts where one contract changes your year, and the strategic renewals you cannot afford to lose.

One to few.

You group accounts sharing a real situation: the same stack, the same migration, the same compliance driver, the same renewal quarter. One proposition serves the group, adjusted lightly for each.

One to many, run programmatically.

The mid-market and the long tail, scored against your ideal customer profile and followed by account rather than by lead volume. This is the tier your existing data already supports.

Your customers get their own tier.

Retention and expansion need their own plan, their own owner and their own triggers. Treating them as an afterthought is how recurring revenue quietly leaks.

How It Runs

The 3-step myGTMplan process: Review, Insight Workshop, Solutions Workshop

The research comes first. Accounts are scored, the market sized, and the real buying groups mapped inside the accounts you named, before anyone meets. Then comes the Insight Workshop, where your sales and marketing leads build the strategy page with that research in front of them. The Solutions Workshop settles the playbook, the tier split and the stage measures.

The order matters. Research first is what stops the workshop turning into a room of people swapping impressions of their own market.

Where AI Does The Work

AI does the research and the first drafts. Mapping a buying group that now reaches well outside IT, tracking funding rounds, leadership changes, stack changes and renewal dates across hundreds of accounts, then drafting for each role: this is work no team gets to by hand. You are probably already selling AI to somebody. This is what it looks like pointed at your own pipeline. The judgement stays with your team, and with someone who has trained more than 400 enterprise marketers to make these calls.

Questions And Answers

Q. We already own an ABM platform. Is this not the same thing?

A. No. A platform tells you which companies are showing interest. It does not tell you which of them deserve your team's time, settle the argument between your sales director and your marketing manager about the target list, or tell anyone what to do on Monday morning.

Buying the software before agreeing the plan is the most common expensive mistake we see. The plan makes the platform you already pay for more useful.

How myGTMplan compares with the alternatives

Q. How is this different from ordinary marketing with a list of target companies?

A. Look at what your reports show. If they tell you how many enquiries came in and which channels produced them, but not which named companies are paying attention, then it is ordinary marketing with a filter on it.

This plan is built so you can report by company.

Q. We could sell to thousands of companies, not fifty. Does this still apply?

A. Yes, and it is what makes a market that size affordable.

Most of those companies sit in a large group reached through shared campaigns. A smaller group shares one approach between them. Only a few get individual attention. When a company in the large group starts showing real interest, it moves up and gets more.

Selling Into A Different Sector?

The method is the same. The buying committee, the triggers and the length of the cycle are not.

All five sectors

One plan covering your whole market, across all three tiers.
